The 4 Step Process of N&N
1. Build the Situation:
The first step to developing a role-play in any form is to develop the situation. In building a situation, we set the scene for our students to act out their parts in. The situation encompasses the entirety of the world in which the role play is set. As the teacher/leader, you are responsible for the map of the region, the composition and actions of all other nations, and the environment that challenges the students (see World Building). |
3. Converge on a Decision:
After each group has come to a decision about what is in their best interest, a select number (perhaps all) groups shall present their plans for consideration. Students then take a vote on their plan of action and the motion moves into actualization. The process of coming to a decision make take on alternative forms based upon the form of the student-constructed government. The voting may be a poll of the entire population or students, or it may be a vote by representation. |
4. Apply Consequence:
The final step of the process depends heavily on the timing of the lesson/activity. Sometimes this step will take place immediately after the decision has been made by the students, but often it will take place at the beginning of the subsequent activity. By spacing out the consequence, teachers will be able to consider how best to allow the student plan to manifest curricular outcomes. Delaying this step also functions as a perpetual cliffhanger, so students will constantly be looking forward to the effects of their previous planning, similarly to how actual national and global committees operate. |
