Student Formed LawsFor added impact, consider giving students the option to create and enforce their own laws and game rules to ensure fair play within the class. Students are generally eager to build their own rules and expectations if they are certain that these rules will be enforced.

Rules and Restrictions of Needs & NationsRules and Restrictions to Role Play:
Role playing exercises require a free and accessible structure in order to be effective as learning tools. However, they also require the strict application of a set of rules to maintain order and effectiveness during the activity. For example:
Aside from these simple rules, the focus of the activity is on flexibility. Students will take the activity in unexpected and unpredictable ways, the key as a teacher is not to impose a strict structure through the situation. Allow students to make their choices independently, and then cope with the consequences. Aside from keeping the room orderly and on-task, try to limit the number of restrictions so that students feel free to take the exercise where they feel most comfortable or willing. If students see an undesirable consequence to their nation's actions then they will rethink the method. Try not to stop an action before it is done unless it is nonsensical or unfoundedly extreme (e.g. the creation and use of nuclear weapons). Ultimately, you are building the world for the students to explore. In this project, the world is a geopolitical stage that features a single rising nation and the challenges it will face. |
